Warwickshire v Oxfordshire April 15th 2007

The first home match of the year saw Warwickshire take on Oxfordshire at Rileys, Hertford Place and the Warks Men’s A were hoping to build on the narrow win they had at Bucks in February.

Things started well with the Lads winning the first section 6-5 and they increased their margin in the 2nd section with an 8-3 score line that put them 14-8 in front.

Oxford A began to find their form a little in the 3rd section and won it 6-5, but Warks A were still 19-14 in front with only 4 frames needed for victory …………..  however, someone un tightened the wheel nuts!

The Great Chicken Randle made it 20-14, but then the wheels completely fell off the Warwickshire bandwagon as they lost 7 frames in a row to see Oxford take a 21-20 lead.

Nige Griffiths pulled it back to 21 all, Oxford made it 22-21 and it was left up to Paul Mason to salvage a draw for the home side.

Chicken Randle (pictured right) was awarded the Man of the match trophy for his 3 out of 4 ahead of Ian Jones who also won 3 from 4.

Team: Chicken Randle, Mark Chapman, Ian Jones, Keith Garner, Paul Willis, Lee Steptoe, Karl Knight, Surinder Singh, Nige Griffiths, Roger Hunt, Paul Mason and Baz Hinde.

In the B section, Dave Collins was still struggling to find places for everyone even with some players missing due to Cov League finals day – we had 6 reserves!

A good start saw the B team go 6-5 in front and they repeated that form in the 2nd section to increase their lead to 12-10.

Rob Butterworth and Tonksy were introduced in the 3rd section and both won to help the B team secure an 8-3 win giving them a 20-12 lead going into the final section.

A couple more substitutes were inserted, but to no effect and the team struggled in the early stages as Oxford pulled back to 21-16, but Tonksy made it 22-16 and Jase Page got the match winner in the very next frame. Final score 25-19 to Warwickshire.

An unheard of 4 out of 4 from Andy West (pictured left) earned him the Man of the match trophy whilst there were 3 out of 4’s from Dave Easson, Johnny Martin and Russ Blinco and 2 out of 2’s from Tonksy and Rob Butterworth.

Team: Mark Winham, Sam Mills, Dave Easson, Ben Gilbey, Russ Blinco, Dave Collins, Jason Page, John Martin, Aaron Easson, Scott Varden, Andy West, Rob Butterworth, Martin Tonks, Gaz Calcott, Hitesh Gohil, Steve McKervey and Kyle Wasson.

The Ladies were hoping to improve on the previous match’s performance and there was an air of optimism in the camp as several players had been putting in some “serious practise”!

Ali Wilkins had been practising how to get a litre of Vodka into a half pint glass,  Sheelagh had graduated from bottles of wine to BOXES of wine and Sara & Kirsty had been training on how to drink 10 pints of lager and play pool simultaneously …… and they’d had a bloody good try the previous Friday evening!

A bright start saw the Girls go 3-1 up, but they lost the 1st section 4-7. Much better performances in sections 2 and 3 which they 6-5 and 6-5 respectively to go into the final section 16-17 behind.

Oxford got 18, Sheelagh pulled one back,  Oxford got 19 and then Liz and Sara levelled the score.

Wins by Lorna and Katie saw Warks take a 21-20 lead, but Oxford won the final 3 frames to snatch a 23-21 victory.

A brilliant 4 out of 4 from Liz Cheetham (pictured right) earned her the Player of the match trophy whilst there were excellent 3 out of 4’s from Wendy Forde, Sheelagh Williams, and Ali Wilkins.

Team:  Wendy Forde, Sheelagh Williams, Cat Jarvis, Liz Cheetham, Sara Brennan, Julie Brittain, Lorna Kernaghan, Katie Bonham, Claire Quinney, Kirsty Campbell and Ali Wilkins.

Next match will be a tester when Warwickshire take on arch rivals, Northamptonshire, at Rileys, Hertford Place on Sunday May 20th.
