Warwickshire v Buckinghamshire Sunday August 10th 2008

Gaz Calcott Pool Guru...

The Geordies for a top four spot this season... Why-Aye man!!!!!

Hysteria and celebrations in the Ladies team! What’s up, did they win – no, they had 12 players!

And so we entered the final section trailing 19-14, but sadly they lost out 7-4 to give Bucks an overall win of 26-18.

Captain Katie had rallied round the troops and put a full team out against the Bucks Bunnies – that’s one team that you really want to catch Myxomatosis!!!!

Not the best of beginnings as the seemingly “On form” Bunnies went 9-2 in front in the 1st section, but then Warwickshire ladies won the 2nd section 6-5 and then really upset the apple cart by winning the 3rd section 6-5!

Once again Ali Wilkins led the way with a brilliant and hard fought 4 out of 4, but Bucks decided to award the player of trophy to Julie Brittain (pictured with Gaz) for her 3 out of 4 achievement.

Team: Wendy Forde, Katie Bonham, Tor Andrews, Sally Brazener, Kat Jarvis, Tracy Layfield, Ali Wilkins, Skye Smith, Julie Brittain, Hazel Payne, Charlie Scarff and Lorna Kernaghan

A couple of players missing for the B team provided openings for Steve Valentine and Dave Hegarty to get their first start in a county match as the team attempted to build on their 2 out of 2 winning start to the 2008 campaign.

'B' Team

'A' Team

An edgy start to the match saw Bucks B take the first section 6-5, but the Warks lads rallied around to take 8 straight frames and win the 2nd section 8-3, putting them 13-9 in front at the halfway mark.

The Warwickshire B team were hoping for a good result in order to maintain their position at the top of the table, but Bucks B weren’t about to give the game away that easy.

Russ Blinco made it 20, Ponty and Valley made it 22 to ensure the draw and Dave Lea cleared up in emphatic style to secure the win …… which was just as well as Warwickshire LOST the last 6 frames! Final score was 23-21 to Warwickshire B.

Bucks won 3 frames to make it 13-12 and Warks replied with 4 in a row to regain their advantage and they won the section 6-5 which meant they went into the final section 19-14 up, needing 4 more frames for victory.

Superb performances from Dave Lea and Steve Valentine who both notched up 4 win from 4 frames, but the Bucks captain decided that the man of the match trophy should go the “Valley” pictured above.

Elsewhere, Roy Pontefract, Azza Easson and Martin Groves contributed with 3 out of 4’s.

Team: Russ Blinco, Neil Pincham, Howard Bailie, Roy Pontefract, Steve Valentine, Dave Lea, Russ Harding, Martin Groves, Mark Winham, Aaron Easson, Dave Collins, Chris Lowe, Dave Easson and Gaz Calcott.

Ladies

Paul Willis led the attack for Warks and the Lads won the 1st section 6-5, however, Bucks were starting to find their form and they won the 2nd section 6-5 to make it 11-11 at the halfway stage.

The holiday season took it’s toll on the squad, but never the less, the Warks Mens A team put in a great performance against Bucks Mens A.

Warwickshire stepped up a gear to take the 3rd section 7-4 to give them an 18-15 lead going into the final section.

Bucks pulled it back to 18-17, but then Warks took 5 frames in succession to secure victory with Ben Deeley getting the match winner for Warwickshire A. Final score 26-18.

A brilliant 4 out of 4 saw Roger Hunt (pictured) take the Man of the match trophy whilst there were 3 out of 4 performances from Paul Willis, Rich Mills, Andy West and Craig Sturmey. A special mention for Young James Willis who pulled out a 7 ball clearance to really piss off one of the Buck’s Mens team players who was last seen sulking at the bar muttering something about “Shouldn’t he be doing his paper round instead of playing pool”
Team: Paul Willis, Karl Knight, Sam Mills, James Willis, Rich Mills, Andy West, Ben Deeley, Dave Hegarty, Craig Sturmey, Baz Hinde and Roger Hunt
